Privacy Policy

Short version: Dark Night Mode Everywhere does not collect, store off your device, transmit, sell, or share any of your data. There are no accounts, no analytics, and no servers.

Who we are

Dark Night Mode Everywhere (“the extension”) is a browser extension that applies an eye-friendly dark theme to the websites you visit. This policy explains exactly what the extension does — and does not do — with your information.

Our data practices in one line

The extension runs entirely on your own device. To turn a website dark it reads and restyles the page you are viewing, but that processing happens locally in your browser and never leaves it.

Information stored locally (never uploaded)

The following is saved using the browser’s own storage API (chrome.storage), on your device only. It is never sent to us or anyone else:

Your settings — master on/off, active theme, brightness / contrast / sepia / blue-light adjustments, reading-mode and font options, automation rule and schedule, and engine mode.
Per-site choices you make — a website’s hostname together with your on/off or appearance choice for that site.
Custom themes you create.
Location coordinates — only if you explicitly press “Use my location” for sunset/sunrise scheduling. They are stored locally and used solely for an on-device sunrise/sunset calculation; they are never transmitted.

The extension keeps no history of any kind — it does not log the pages you visit or customize. You can erase everything it has stored at any time from Settings → General → Reset, or by removing the extension.

Information we do NOT collect

No personally identifiable information (name, email, address, age, IDs).
No health, financial, or payment information.
No authentication information (passwords, credentials, PINs).
No personal communications (emails, texts, chats).
No browsing or web history — the extension does not record, store, or transmit the list of sites you visit.
No page content, form data, keystrokes, or cookies are collected, stored, or sent anywhere.
No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, advertising, tracking, or data sales of any kind.

Network activity

The extension makes no requests to any developer server or third-party service. The only network request it can make is to re-fetch a stylesheet (CSS) from the same website you are already viewing — this is needed because browsers block a page from reading its own cross-origin CSS, and the extension must read those colors to compute a dark version. That request retrieves a CSS file the browser already downloaded, contains no personal data, and its result is used only to calculate dark colors in memory. CSS is data, not code — the extension runs no remote or externally hosted code.

Permissions and why they are needed

Host access (<all_urls>) — to apply the dark-mode styles on the sites you choose to view, and to re-fetch a page’s own cross-origin stylesheets locally (as described above). No page content, URL, or user data is ever sent off your device.
storage — to save your settings, per-site choices, and custom themes locally on your device.
tabs — to apply your settings across your open tabs and to identify the current site’s hostname so the popup, keyboard shortcuts, and context-menu actions can target the right page. A tab’s URL is used only to derive the hostname for per-site rules and is never stored or transmitted.
alarms — to switch dark mode on or off at the next scheduled sunrise/sunset or custom-schedule boundary, without constant polling.
contextMenus — to provide right-click quick actions on the extension’s toolbar icon.

Third parties

There are none. The extension does not integrate any third-party SDKs, analytics, advertising, or data brokers, and it shares data with no one.

Data retention and deletion

All data is stored locally on your device and is retained only until you delete it. You can remove it at any time via Settings → General → Reset or by uninstalling the extension, which clears its local storage.

Children’s privacy

The extension is a general-purpose utility, does not target children, and collects no personal information from anyone, including children.

Your rights

Because the extension collects no personal data and stores everything locally under your control, there is no personal data for us to access, correct, export, or delete on your behalf — you already have full, direct control over all of it on your device. These practices are designed to align with privacy regulations such as the GDPR and CCPA.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the “Last updated” date above will be revised and the updated policy will be published at the same location. Material changes will be reflected in the Chrome Web Store listing.
